HOW TO WORK CROCHET

L ‘ crochet is a form of textile art whose origin is lost in the mists of time and whose artifacts have been found in every corner of the world, from the Far East to Africa and Europe. Our grandmothers often handed down this particular process, who used it to make doilies, hats, laces. But today, we can also learn it independently, relying on the numerous guides and video tutorials that the network makes available to us.

HOW TO LEARN CROCHET

Here then, step by step, how to learn how to crochet :

  • First, buy a crochet hook, a long iron or aluminum hook, possibly No. 3 or No. 4, because these are neither too big nor too small, so perfect to start with; then buy a ball suitable for this type of knitting. Try not to purchase mohair wool because it is complicated to work and melt in case of beginner mistakes. Instead of preferring colored acrylic, much more accessible. On the label of the balls, you will find the indication of the crochet to use with them.
  • The fundamental hand in crochet is the one that holds the thread, not the one that moves the underwire. So, if you are right-handed, it is the left hand that does the work. If, on the contrary, you are left-handed, the secret will be in the movement of the right hand. The thread must be neither too tight nor too soft but instead sliding on your palm. Otherwise, the whole work will be compromised. If you have a fragile thread, run it only once around the little finger, then pass the stump inside the palm, then over the index finger, and then pass it behind the finger itself to keep it firmly between the pads of the thumb middle finger.
  • The second step is represented by the handle, which you will choose according to your comfort. You can grip the crochet hook by holding it with your thumb and index finger or advancing your index finger over the crochet rod while the thumb supports the part immediately below it. Usually, for sheer convenience, the crochet should be held on the flat side, the central one, as if it were a pen.

Bottom Line

  • At this point, start the actual work. Make a knot, insert the hook in it, but the iron on top of the thread, apply a little pressure, pass it under, and finally rotate it. You will have formed a circle around your crochet hook. Now take some yarn and pull it through the curve. You have made your first starting jersey. At this point, it is the practice that counts, so try to make at least a hundred chains to learn how to hold the thread and the iron in your hand.
  • If you want to make a chain stitch, put the yarn on the hook. And pull it into the first stitch to make a buttonhole. Repeat the operation until you reach the length you want.
  • For the slip stitch, insert the hook in the penultimate stitch. Take the yarn and pull it back through a buttonhole. Repeat the operation until the desired length is reached.
  • For the single crochet stitch, insert the hook into the penultimate stitch and pull it through the base stitch. At this point, you will end up with two stitches on the hook. Retake the yarn and pass it through both stitches. At the end of the row, to turn, make a chain.
  • To make the mesh high, discard the wire above the hook and put it into the base mesh, in the fourth chain, without considering the slot on which lies the crochet. Then, pull the thread away through the chain. So you end up with three buttonholes above the crochet hook. Put the line back on and then pull it out through the loops left on the underwire. At the end of the row, chain three to turn your work.
