Early life:
She was born on February 18, 1931, in Lorain, Ohio. She graduated with B.A. in English from Howard University in 1953, and later got her master’s degree in American Literature in 1955, from Cornell University.
In 1957, she returned to Howard as a lecturer in English and worked there for the next seven years. She got married in 1958 and had two children, but in 1964, she divorced.

Toni Morrison earned as much fame as anyone can just imagine. Her first novel was published in 1970, but the book that brought her in the corridor of fame was Soul of Solomon, which was published in 1977. She got a National Book Critics Circle Award for that book.
She also won the Pulitzer Prize in 1988, for “Beloved” that she wrote in 1987. But the most memorable year for her is surely 1993, when she, Toni Morrison, won the Nobel Prize for Literature.
In 1996, Toni Morrison was selected for Jefferson Lecture by National Endowment for the Humanities, which is the U.S federal Gov. highest honor for the achievement in the humanities, and the same year, she was awarded, “National Book Foundation’s Medal”.
